commentary thesis

Since I have been on campus at UCF I have noticed that the parking situaion isn't very good. I have noticed so far that there are many students that park on campus, and not enough spaces to park. There are a lot of garages and lots on campus, yet people still have trouble finding places to park because of so many students choosing to drive to school. This is important because this decides the students’ day. If a student has trouble finding a place to park, they could be late to class; which is never good.

friend letter

The parking on campus at UCF is an absolute nightmare. Over the past few weeks I have noticed that it is very hard to find a place to park. I have had to drive around the parking garage multiple times before I finally found a parking space. Sometimes, I even have to go to a different lot or garage. Also, I noticed that parking is so overloaded that people with the wrong pass park in the parking lot designated for my apartment complex. So now the residents in my apartments have to find a different place to park even though they have the correct pass to park in the apartment lot.

Why do you think parking is so bad here on campus? I believe there are a few reasons that empty parking spaces are scarce. One reason I believe is that the school gives out more passes than there are parking spaces. Everyone who wants a pass can buy one. This works if there are not many people that drive and park on campus, but there are too many people that do that. Also, people park on campus without a parking pass. Parking officials need to be better at cracking down on people without the correct pass to park on campus.

How do you think the parking situation should be solved? There are a few things the school could do to make the parking situation on campus much easier for the students. One thing that could be done to increase the amount of parking is adding more parking lots. There is plenty of space around campus to add more parking lots. Also, there is a new building going up over an old parking lot. If you are going to take away a lot, you should put a new in replace of it. My other idea to improve the parking situation is to turn existing lots into parking garages. Parking garages hold more than twice as many cars as do parking lots.

The parking situation on campus also could hinder the education of students. Having trouble finding a place to park could cause students to be late for their classes. On busy days, a student might have to spend up to twenty or thirty minutes trying to find a place to park their car. Then, if they do not park near their class they have to walk across campus which could take about ten to fifteen minutes depending on where you are in relation to your class. This would force students to leave their homes earlier to try and find a place to park. By doing this, they are cutting down on their sleep or their study time in the morning. So, there are few reasons why parking is not very good on campus. Also, there are a few things that the school could do to help out the students with the parking problems.

interview

a) How do you know what you know? (evidence)
b) Who are you to the subject? (perspective)
c) How is this event connected to other events? (patterns or opposing forces)
d) What if things were different? (suppositions/predictions)
e) Why is this important? (significance)

a) Firsthand experience, getting here very early to try and find a place to park
b) I am an active participant when it comes to trying to find a parking spot.
c) Trying to find a place to park leads to “parking lot stalking”, or following someone to take their parking space.
d) No one would have to compete for a parking spot. There would be adequate parking for everyone.
e) It’s important because it can be hazardous. People could not be paying attention to the road and focusing on finding a space, could hit people, other cars, etc.

1) Why is the parking situation so bad?
2) What causes parking to be so bad?
3) How can parking be improved on campus?
4) How does parking compare to other places in the area?
5) What alternatives are there instead of parking?

1) There are not enough spots and it is very competitive to find a space.
2) There are not enough spaces for the amount of passes being given.
3) More spaces, spreading class time so students aren’t all at the school at the same time, more garages.
4) Parking is much worse on campus than other places in the area except on weekends.
5) Park and ride, car pool, bike, public transportation.

commentary intro

I have noticed a few things on campus that might need a little work. The main thing I have noticed is the parking situation. It is nearly impossible to find a parking space near your destination. I always have to park in the next lot or parking garage over from where I want to go.

I think there should be more lots or more garages. They took away a large parking lot to build a performing arts building. If they are going to turn a parking lot into something else, they should at least build a new one to replace it. The school also issues out a pass to everyone who pays for one. There are a lot more cars with stickers than there are parking spaces on campus.

I think the school should only give out as many passes as there are spaces on campus. Also, they should only give passes to the students that really need them, such as: commuters and people that live off campus in places that do not have a shuttle that comes to campus.

There are many steps the school can take to improve the parking situation here on campus. Whether it’s more parking spaces or less passes.
